POKOTABI / Ōkawaya
大川屋
Situated across from the historical Kira residence site in Ryogoku, Ōkawaya is a long-standing confectioner known for kinako-scented Kira manju, fragrant Sumidagawa monaka, and seasonal wagashi.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Across from Honjo Matsuzakacho Park in Ryogoku, right by the former residence of Kira Kozukenosuke, Ōkawaya crafts traditional Japanese confections deeply rooted in local history. Among the storefront selections, the standout tribute to this setting is Kira manju, encasing a moist, fragrant paste made by blending kinako roasted soybean flour with white bean paste. Another enduring staple is Sumidagawa monaka, crisp wafer shells filled generously with moderately sweet bean paste, available in both white and dark varieties that have long made it a favored souvenir.
Inside the display case, visitors will find treats tailored for tea, from Onihei dango—featuring a pleasant contrast of savory green nori flakes over white bean paste—to momoyama and moist kimama. Confections marking the changing seasons are equally well regarded, such as springtime kashiwa mochi, autumn steamed chestnut yokan, and Anju, a whole preserved apricot wrapped in soft gyuhi. Individual items can be selected and boxed together, making it easy to drop in during a walk through Tokyo's old downtown and assemble a personal assortment for home or as a gift.
